Horary astrology is usually explained very simply: a person asks a question, the astrologer casts a chart for the moment of the question, and answers “yes” or “no”.
This leaves the impression that a horary chart is simply the horoscope of the question — something that comes into being the moment a person speaks it.
That is the first, and most common, misconception.
In reality, a horary chart is not the horoscope of the question. It is the horoscope of the situation the person is asking about.
Suppose you ask about a new job. The chart then shows not only you, but the employer, the other candidates, the circumstances, the hidden obstacles, the interests of everyone involved, and how the whole situation is going to unfold.
That is why an experienced horary astrologer does not answer with a bare “yes” or “no”. He can describe what will happen, why it will happen, who will play the key role, and over what period of time the events will develop.
You arrive with a question. The chart unfolds a whole stage in front of you, on which you are merely one of the players.
The moment the stars shape the future
A natural question follows: why should a chart describe a situation at all?
The answer is straightforward: because, from time to time, the stars intervene in the ordinary flow of earthly events.
Most events in a life unfold on their own — carried along by circumstances already in place, by people’s decisions, and by ordinary chance. During such periods, the stars are not shaping what happens next.
But there are moments when celestial configurations genuinely begin to influence a whole network of interconnected people, and through them, the development of a particular situation.
At such a moment, the planets act not on one person, but on an entire group — and out of that group’s dynamics, concrete events are later born.
That is the moment a horary astrologer is trying to catch.
If the question is asked at a moment when the stars are genuinely taking part in shaping the future of the situation, the chart describes what is happening precisely and reveals how it will unfold.
Such a chart is called radical, and this property itself is called radicality. Radicality is what decides whether a horary forecast is possible for a given question at all.
When the chart does not work
If the celestial influence is absent, the chart is not “wrong”. It simply contains no information about the future of the situation you care about.
In practice, this happens for several reasons.
The first: the situation is unfolding without any astrological influence at all. Events are determined by chance or by causes already in motion, so the chart has nothing to show about the future.
The second: the chart is radical, but it describes a different situation from the one the client is worried about. Sometimes a person is preoccupied with one question, while the stars are, at that moment, shaping another, far more significant event in their life.
In each of these cases, an experienced horary astrologer can usually see that the chart is not fit to answer the question that was asked.
The limits of horary astrology
An important conclusion follows from this.
Horary astrology is not meant to produce an answer to any question at any time.
If every chart always contained reliable information about the future, astrologers would long ago have learned to win at casinos without fail, to predict stock quotes, or to call the results of sporting events.
That does not happen.
The chart works only when the situation under study genuinely contains a moment of astrological shaping of future events.
That, at once, is the principal strength and the principal limit of horary astrology.
Why horary is counted among the most accurate methods
Despite these limits, horary astrology is considered one of the most accurate branches of traditional astrology.
The reason is simple: when a chart is radical, it describes not a person’s inner state, but the objective situation and how it will unfold.
This idea has been tested statistically, too.
A group of independent astrologers ran a pilot study comparing astrologers’ ability to time future events against the results of people guessing dates at random.
The results were published in the peer-reviewed journal Correlation — a detailed pilot study on the accuracy of horary forecasts.
