Synastry is usually ordered with one goal — to find out what will happen with a relationship. Will we get together? Will there be a marriage? Will the partner cheat? Will we break up, or spend our whole lives together?
At first glance the answer seems obvious: take two natal charts, look at the aspects between them — and the future of the couple becomes clear.
But that is exactly what synastry cannot do.
What synastry shows
Synastry is a static picture of the interaction between two natal charts.
It shows where it is easy for two people to understand each other, where conflicts arise, who tends to dominate, who to yield, what psychological mechanisms switch on between the partners. In other words, it describes the structure of compatibility.
That is useful information. But it does not answer questions about the future.
From synastry alone it is impossible to say that in half a year there will be an affair, that a divorce will follow in 2028, or that a child will be born in 2030. There is simply no time in synastry. It describes the structure of a relationship, not its development.
Compatibility does not yet mean a happy relationship
There is another reason synastry often leads people astray.
The most psychologically stable couples are not necessarily the happiest ones.
Not infrequently, a relationship holds together for years not because the two people are good together, but because each is unconsciously reproducing a script familiar from childhood.
Picture a woman who keeps choosing emotionally unavailable men, replaying a familiar model of relating to her father. And a man who keeps distancing himself from a loving woman, repeating the pattern of his relationship with an over-controlling mother.
Bring these two together — and you get a remarkably stable couple. She will pursue closeness, he will pull away, then return, then leave again. The cycle can run for years.
Such a relationship can indeed be very stable.
And synastry is quite capable of showing that stability.
But it will not answer whether that bond is a happy one, or merely a coincidence of two complementary psychological scripts.
Synastry sees the aspects between the charts. What stands behind those aspects — love, a mature partnership, or mutual dependence — is already the work of a psychologist.
And what will happen to that couple next, whether the union will hold, whether an affair or a divorce will happen — synastry does not show that at all.
For that, a different instrument is needed.
Why synastry cannot predict events
The future of a relationship consists of events.
The meeting, the start of a romance, a reconciliation, an affair, a pregnancy, a wedding, a divorce — all of these happen at a specific moment in time.
Synastry, though, is two unchanging natal charts laid one on top of the other. It contains no mechanism for the development of a situation, shows no sequence of events in a couple, and gives no timing.
That is why it answers the question “how do these two interact?” beautifully, but not the question “what will happen to them?”
Why horary astrology can answer such questions
Horary astrology works differently.
It considers not the compatibility of two characters, but the situation itself at the moment of the question.
When a person asks about a relationship, a chart is cast that describes the development of that exact situation: you, the partner, the hidden circumstances, the outside influences, and the direction in which events will unfold.
That is why horary can answer precisely the questions people most often bring to an astrologer:
- will we get together;
- will there be a reconciliation, and when;
- is there an affair;
- when will he propose;
- will this romance end, and over what.
That is why horary belongs to predictive astrology, while synastry does not.
An example from practice
The difference between these two approaches shows especially well on real examples.
In one of my published analyses, a horary chart showed a future affair and the ensuing divorce roughly two and a half months before those events took place. And it was not only the events themselves that were indicated, but the timing of when they would manifest. All of it was confirmed.
The same analysis in Russian — on YouTube.
Getting such a forecast from synastry alone is impossible, because synastry does not work with the development of events in time.
When to choose synastry, and when horary
If you want to understand why it is easy or hard for the two of you, what strengths and weaknesses your relationship has — you need synastry.
It will honestly show the structure of how two people interact.
But if your real question sounds different —
- “Will we be together?”
- “Will the partner return?”
- “Is there an affair?”
- “Will this relationship end?”
- “When will the situation resolve?”
— then what you need is not a compatibility analysis, but a forecast of how the situation will develop.
That is exactly what horary astrology is for.
In practice, most people who come for synastry actually want to know their future. And if that is the question, it is wiser to choose, from the start, the astrological instrument built to predict events.
Want to know not only how compatible you are, but how your relationship will actually unfold?
Book a horary consultation. A horary chart can examine not the partners’ characters but the situation itself — its hidden causes, its likely development, and the timing of the key events.
